George

QuestionAnswer
George gets frustrated with Lennie's inability to remember. ‘So you forgot that awready, did you? Jesus Christ, you're a crazy bastard!’ [Mental disability]
George tells Lennie how life is for other working men. ‘Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no fambly. They don't belong to no place.' [Working Men | Great Depression]
George tells Lennie how it is for them. ‘With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.’ [Friendship]
Starts to believe they could achieve the dream. ‘George said reverently … I bet we could swing her.’ [Dream]
When he is about to shoot Lennie. 'George's voice was almost a whisper. He looked steadily at his right hand that held the gun.'
He wants to own a farm for independence. 'And it'd be our own, an' nobody could can us.' [Dream]
Looks after Lennie like he was a parent. ‘You remember about us goin’ into Murray and Ready’s, and they give us work cards and bus tickets?’ [Great Depression]
When George recites the dream the first time, his voice changes. 'George's voice became deeper. He repeated his words rhythmically' [Dream]
Tells Slim he travels around with Lennie because he does not want to become bitter and alone. He is worried about becoming one of those 'mean little guys'. [Great Depression/Working Man]
Tells Lennie to stay away from Curley's Wife. 'she's a rattrap if ever I seen one.' [Treatment of women]
When he realises that Lennie killed Curley's wife and the dream is dead. 'I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we'd never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would.' [Dream]
Slim tells George he was right to shoot Lennie. 'Never you mind,' said Slim. 'A guy got to sometimes.' [Masculinity | authorial intention]
Tries to protect Lennie when he realises he has killed Curley's Wife. 'Couldn' we maybe bring him in an' they'll lock him up? He's nuts, Slim. He never done this to be mean.' [Mental disability]
His dream is modest. 'have a little house and a couple of acres.' [Dream]
