| Incubation (eggs) | Period from fertilization of the egg until it hatches |
| Mantle | Soft covering over the organs of a mollusk |
| Omnivore | Eating both animals and vegetables as food |
| Carnivore | Animals feeding or preying on animals, eating only animals as food |
| Herbivore | Animals that eat primarily on the available vegetation and decayed organic material in the environment |
| Bloom | Used to describe flourishing algae in a pond |
| Zooplankton | Minute animals in water, chiefly rotifers and crustaceans |
| Rotifers | Many-celled, microscopic aquatic organisms having rings of cilia that in motion resemble revolving wheels |
| Bivalve | Animals with two sides of a shell hinged together |
| Molting | For crustaceans, the shedding of the exoskeleton |
| Phytoplankton | Minute plants suspended in water, frequently referred to as algae |
| Diffusion | The spreading out of a molecules in a given space |
| Decapod | An animal with 10 legs, such as a crawfish |
| Siphon | Tubular structure for drawing in or expelling liquids |
