What is the function of protein? used for growth, maintenance, and repair of tissues
What are food sources of protein? meat, fish, eggs, dried beans, milk, peas, nuts and seeds
What happens if you do not get enough protein in your diet? results in slow growth and you may develop infections
What is the main function of carbohydrates? main source of energy in our body
What foods are sources of carbohydrates? candy, fruits, milk and veggies ,breads, cereals, bran and whole grains
What are the three carbohydrates and the function of each? sugars(quick source of energy), starches (longer lasting energy), fiber (aids in digestion)
What happens if you get too many carbohydrates in your diet? weight gain
What is the function of fat? insulates body from cold and protects vital organs
What foods are sources of fat? butter, mayo, meats, cheese,and salad dressing
what happens if you get too much fat in your diet? weight gain
what are the functions of water? regulates body temp
how much water should you get each day? 8-8oz glasses per day
water soluble need to eat everyday
fat soluble don´t need everyday and too much can make you sick

What is the function of Vitamin A? keeps skin in good conditions
What foods are sources of Vitamin A? yellow and green vegetables, fruit, and animal fat
What is the function of B Vitamins? helps release energy from food
What foods are sources of B Vitamins? grains; green, leafy vegetables; legumes; meat; milk
What happens if pregnant women don’t get enough folic acid in their diet? baby is at higher risk for birth defects
What are the functions of Vitamin c? helps heal broken bones and mend wounds, use some nutrients, resist infections, maintain healthy gums, skin and teeth
What foods are sources of Vitamin C? citrus fruits, strawberries, broccli and tomatoes
What is the function of Vitamin D? helps the body use some minerals needed to build bones and teeth
What foods are sources of Vitamin D? found in some fish, and fortified milk
What is the function of Vitamin E? keeps oxygen in body from disolving other nutrients

What is the function of iron? makes hemoglobin and myoglobin

What is the function of iodine? to make thyroid hormones

What is the function of fluoride? inhibits or reverses the initiation and progression of dental caries (tooth decay) and stimulates new bone formation

What are nutritional needs based on? the estimated average requirement (EAR) of a population group.
