Oxidation rule
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Elements when not combine with atoms of different elements are given a value of zero. | Na is 0; F2= 0 O2=0 O3=0 |
Any simple monatomic ion (one-atom ion) has an oxidation number equal to its charge | Na+ is +1, O2- is 2- |
The sum of the oxidation numbers if all of the atoms in a formula must equal the charge | if O is -2 in CO3^2- then C oxidation number is +4 to make sure it equals 0 |
Elements of the 1st, 2nd family will have an oxidation number of +1 and +2. Boron family +3 , except thallium it can also be +1 | 1st family is Na, K, Rb, etc 2nd family is Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba Boron family contains Al, Ga, In, TI |
F is always -1, O is always -2 unless combine with F or another Oxygen | CO3^-2 O= -2 C= +4 |
H is +1 if combined with nonmetals and -1 if combined with metals | Nonmetals are C, N, O, F, H, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn, Cl, Br, I, Se, S, P Metals are everything else besides, B, Si, Ge, Sb, As, Te, Po, At |
