| sheet tab | an indicator at the bottom of the window that identifies a worksheet |
| worksheet | a single sheet in a workbook file that lets you enter and manipulate data, perform calculations with data, and analyze data |
| column heading | a letter that appears above each worksheet column to identify it |
| row heading | a row number in a box on the left side of a worksheet row; identifies each row |
| cell | the box formed by the intersection of a column and a row |
| cell reference | the column letter and row number location that identifies a cell within a worksheet, such as A1 |
| active cell | the worksheet cell that you are entering data |
| scroll bar | lets you view a document that is too large to fit on the screen; vertical scroll bar- on the right edge horizontal scroll bar- on the bottom edge |
| status bar | the gray bar at the bottom of the Excel window that show status info about the currently open worksheet, includes view buttons and zoom controls |
| ribbon | the horizontal strip near the top of the window that contains tabs of grouped command buttons that you click to interact with the app |
| formula bar | the area above the worksheet grid where you enter or edit data in the active cell |
| fill handle | a box that appears in the lower-right corner of a selected cell or range |
| = | symbol used to begin a formula |
| Sum | function that totals the value in a range of cells |
| max | largest value in a range of cells |
| min | lowest value in a range of cells |
| average | function that calculates average value in a range of cells |
| .xlsx | extension used to save a Microsoft Excel workbook |
| format | enhance the appearance of information by changing its font, size, color, or alignment |
| font | the appearance and shape of the letters, numbers and special characters |
| point | a unit of measurement in a font |
| cell style | predesigned combination of font, font size, and font color that you can apply to a cell |
| chart sheet | a separate sheet in a workbook that contains only a chart |
| data series | a set of values represented in a chart |
| document properties | details about a file, such as the project author, title, and subject |
| portrait orientation | layout that is taller than it is wide |
| landscape orientation | layout that is wider than it is tall |
| scaling | determines how the worksheet fits on the page |
