Protagonist the leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, or other fictional text
Antagonist a person who actively opposes or is hostile to the protagonist in a story
Biography an account of someone’s life written by someone else
Autobiography an account of a person’s life written by that person
Setting the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place
Conflict a serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one
Climax the highest point of tension or drama in a story’s plot
Resolution the conclusion of a story’s plot
Exposition the beginning of the story in which the setting, characters, and other basic information is introduced
Plot the sequence of events that make up a story
Theme the universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature
Point of View the vantage point from which a story is presented
Dramatic Irony a literary device by which the audience’s or reader’s understanding of events or individuals in a work surpasses that of its characters
Situational Irony the irony of something happening that is very different to what was expected
Verbal Irony the type of irony where a person says one thing and means something else
Imagery the use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appears to the audience’s physical senses
Pun a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings
Personification the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form
Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
Onomatopoeia the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named
Assonance the repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds within words, phrases, or sentences
Persuasive Writing a writing mode used to convince or persuade a reader that the writer's opinion of a topic or cause is correct
Expositive Writing a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner
Descriptive Writing writing in which the author's intent is to create a vivid image of what he/she is describing in the mind of the reader
