| Term | Definition |

| Act | Main division of a drama; Shakespeare’s plays have five of them |
| Aside | Brief remark made by a character and intended to be heard by the audience but not by other characters. |
| Atmosphere | Tone or mood established by events, places or situation |
| Comic Relief | Humorous scene or speech in a serious drama meant to provide relief from emotional intensity |
| Foil | character who contrasts and parallels the main character |
| Foreshadowing | a hint of what is to come in the story |
| Imagery | words or phrases that appeal to the five senses |
| Irony | contrast between what is and what appears to be |
| Paradox | statement which seems contradictory but is at the same time profoundly logical |
| Pun | play on words with similar sounds but different meanings |
| Scene | small unit of a play in which there is no shift of locale |
| Soliloquy | speech given by a character alone on the stage in order to let the audience know what the character is thinking or feeling |
| Tragedy | type of drama that exposes a character’s tragic flaw and ends in defeat and suffering |
