Term | Definition |
---|---|
Point | A reference to a specific location in space |
Line | Reference to a point in motion, a series of adjacent points, a connection between points, or an implied connection between points |
Implied Line | Line created by the viewer's eye |
Implied Point | Point created by the viewer's eye |
Plane | Flat, 2D area with fixed dimensions |
Geometric | A shape derived from or suggested by geometry |
Rectilinear | A shape composed of straight lines or angular corners |
Curvilinear | A shape whose edges are dominated by curves |
Organic | A shape that suggests natural sources or shapes |
Position | The relationship between a figure and the space in which it will function |
Direction | Horizontal, vertical, or diagonal description of a figure |
Size | Measurement of a figure relative to the person perceiving it and relative to the ground |
Proportion | Correlation of size |
Proximity (Gestalt) | The visual tendency to group items together if they are close together |
Similarity (Gestalt) | The visual tendency to group items together if they have a similar appearance |
Continuity (Gestalt) | The visual tendency to create continuous figures |
Closure (Gestalt) | The visual tendency to create closed shapes |
Common Fate (Gestalt) | The visual tendency to group objects together if they are moving in the same direction |
Figure/Ground Reversal | A concept existing when a shape can be seen as either figure or ground |
Figure/Ground Ambiguity | A concept existing when it is impossible to tell the figure from the ground |
Repetition | The use of the same visual element multiple times |
Pattern | The use of the same visual element multiple times in a systematic order |
Balance | The intuitive optical equilibrium between parts of a composition |
Symmetry | The property of being divisible into symmetrical halves across a unique plane |
Asymmetry | An arrangement that lacks symmetry |
Radial Symmetry | Symmetry around a central axis |
Unity | Implied structure or stability in a composition |
Rhythm | The sense of movement established through shape repetition |
Overlap (Depth Cue) | The placement of one shape over the other to create depth |
Shadows-Shading (Depth Cue) | Use of cast shadows and brightness range |
Linear Perspective (Depth Cue) | Perspective based on a vanishing point and receding forms |
Known Size (Depth Cue) | Reveals depth through intrinsic size values |
Relative Size (Depth Cue) | Comparison based on how the mind perceives size |
Atmospheric Perspective (Depth Cue) | Visual phenomena in which the density of the atmosphere progressively increases through space, creating a haze |
Hue | Specific wavelength of color (name of color) |
Saturation | The purity or intensity of a color |
Brightness | Relative lightness or darkness of a color |
Achromatic | A lack of color or hue |
Additive Color | Color created by beams of light; RGB |
Subtractive Color | Color created by light reflected off a pigmented or dyed surface; cyan, magenta, and yellow are 'subtractive primaries' |
Process Color | Using four ink colors to overlap to create the entire color spectrum; black, cyan, yellow, magenta |
Local Color | Color based on observation |
Expressive Color | Subjective color; color based on creative liberty |
Temperature | Warm/cool |
Monochromatic | A color scheme based on one hue |
Analogous | A color scheme based on adjacent hues |
Complementary | A color scheme based on opposite hues |
Split Complementary | A color scheme using one primary color and two complementary |
Simultaneous Contrast | The optical alteration of a color by a surrounding color |
Spreading Effect | The tendency of a color to take on the hue of adjacent colors |
Halo Effect | The tendency of a color to take on the hue of adjacent colors but only at the edges |
