| prose | uses the ordinary form of language |
| Drama | a type of literature meant to be acted on stage |
| Poetry | a genre of literature that expresses emotion through the careful arrangement of words for their sound, rhythm, plus meaning |
| characterization | Techniques used by an author in creating a character |
| Plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| setting | the time and place of in a story |
| Narrator | Person that tells the story |
| Imagery | sensory details (details the appeal to the five senses) |
| Monologue | Prolonged talked or discourse by a single speaker, especially one dominating or monopolizing conversation |
| Dialogue | A conversation between two or more characters |
| Diction | Word choice |
| Denotation | the direct meaning or definition of a word |
| Connotation | An emotional response attached to a word |
| conflict | A struggle between two opposing forces |
| Mood | atmosphere or feeling created in the reader by the literary work |
| symbolism | the use of an object, place, or event to represent something else of greater significance |
| Irony | Difference between what you expect to occur and what actually occurs |
| Critic | one who analyzes, evaluates, and interprets a work of literature |
| Foreshadowing | Techniques used by an author, that give hints to what may happen later in the story |
| Figurative language | Language not meant to be taken seriously/literally |
| Personification | figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis |
| simile | figure of speech comparing two unlike objects using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | figure of speech comparing two unlike objects without using "like" or "as" |
| Exposition | Part of the plot that introduces setting, character, theme, and conflict |
