Term | Definition |

Desktop | The working area of the Windows 2007 screen consisting of program icons, a taskbar, and a Start button. |
Icon | A graphic representation of an object that you can select and open, such as a drive, a disk, a folder, a document or a program. |
Window | A rectangular box that displays information or a program. When a window is open, the name of the window is displayed both in the title bar and in a button on the taskbar. |
Drive | A drive is an area of storage that is formatted with the Windows file system and that has a drive letter such as C, D or H. |
Start Menu | Found in the very bottom left hand corner, this is the key which launches many of the functions that you wish to use. |
Task Pane | An area within an Office program that provides commonly used commands. |
Flash Drives | Are small storage devices that plug into a computer’s Universal Serial Bus (USB) port. They are also known as USB drives or thumbnail drives. |
Recycle Bin | A temporary storage area for files that you have deleted. Files can be either recovered or permanently removed from the recycle bin. |
Maximize | The button in the top right corner used to enlarge a window to occupy the entire screen. |
Minimize | The button in the top right corner used to reduce a window down to a smaller size within the screen. |
File Extension | The 3 or 4 letters at the end of a file name designating what type of program was used to create the file. (ie .doc, .xls, .ppt, .docx). |
Dialog Box | A window that displays and asks you to make a decision about an object or topic. |
Clipboard | The temporary storage area that is used for graphics and images. |
Compress | To reduce the size of a file. There is no limit on the number of files that can be compressed and added to a file. |
Cut | Removes the selected information from the current file. |
Copy | Copies the selected information from the current file. |
Paste | Displays the cut/copied information that was stored temporarily on the clipboard. |
Wordpad | A simple word-processing program that comes with Windows 7. |
Home Page | The page that displays every time you start Internet Explorer. |
Web Page | A document on the World Wide Web that displays a screen with associated links, frames, pictures, and other features of interest. |
Website | A group of related web pages published to a specific location. |
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) | Refers to the unique address of each website (ex. MSN.com). |
Favourites | A list of web addresses that you plan to visit frequently. |
Hyperlink | Text or graphics that, when clicked, take you to another file, page in the website, or a different website. |
Portal | A collection of hyperlinks that connect you to multiple other websites. |
Animated Banner | A series of rotating or changing text used to attract attention or motivate interest. |
History | A feature that allows you to track web pages and sites that you have visited within the last 20 days. |
Data | A single fact or idea. |
Information | Data that has been organized and processed so that it can be presented in a meaningful way. |
Input | The computer gathers data or allows a user to add data. |
Process | Data is converted into information. |
Output | The processed results are retrieved from the computer. |
Storage | Data or information is stored for future use. |
Peripherals | Equipment that is used in conjunction with a computer (ex. mouse). |
Hardware | The physical components of the computer (ex. motherboard). |
ROM (Read Only Memory) | One type of memory that is prerecorded on a chip that cannot be deleted or changed. This memory is maintained even when the computer is turned off. |
RAM (Random Access Memory) | The second type of memory is the computer’s short term memory and temporarily stores data as it is being processed. This memory is lost when the computer is turned off. |
Supercomputers | Large powerful computers that perform specialized tasks. |
Mainframe Computers | Larger computers that are meant to multi-task using large amounts of data. |
Embedded Computers | Computers that are a part of a larger product using digital interface. They usually require minimum input from the user. |
Server | More of a component, they allow access to the desktop computers to the network. |
Bluetooth | A type of wireless technology that relies on radio wave transmission and doesn’t require a clear line of sight. |
Spyware | Software designed to capture personal and confidential information that resides on your system. Although it does not harm your system, it can have an effect on it |
Adware | Spyware that tracks your internet browsing and can install malicious cookies on your computer. |
Cookie | A small text file that contains information that can identify you to a website. |
Print Layout | Displays document as it will look printed. |
Full Screen Reading | Creates easy-to-read pages to increase legibility. |
Web Layout | Shows how the document will look as a web page. |
Outline | Shows document headings and subheadings. |
Draft | Simplifies the page layout for quick typing |
Autocorrect | Feature that corrects common spelling errors as you type. |
Autoformat | Anticipates formatting based on what is typed. |
Format Painter | Copies formatting of specific text or a paragraph and then applies it in other locations of document. |
Bulleted Lists | Use text symbols such as small circles or check marks. |
Numbered Lists | Use consecutive numbers or letters. |
Nonbreaking Hyphen | Keeps hyphenated terms, such as a zip code with the 4- digit extension, together. |
Nonbreaking Space | Keeps two words together so they are not split between two lines. |
Manual Line Break | Ends a line of text. Moves the insertion point to next line without creating a new paragraph. |
Wordwrap | Determines if the next word in line will fit and moves it to the next line if necessary. |
