a priori Proceeding from a known or assumed cause to a necessarily related effect; deductive.
abbé Used as a title for the superior of a monastery in a French-speaking area.
abelia, Abelia Any of various deciduous or evergreen ornamental shrubs of the genus Abelia, native to Asia and Mexico and having small tubular white, pink, or purple flowers.
aberration A deviation from what is typical or normal
abscond To leave quickly and secretly and hide oneself, often to avoid arrest or prosecution.
abyssopelagic Relating to or inhabiting the layer of the water column of the open ocean that lies between the bathypelagic and hadopelagic layers at depths of about 4,000 to 6,000 meters (13,120 to 19,680 feet)
acanthoid shaped like a thorn or spine.
acarpous producing no fruit; sterile
accomodative to make suitable; adapt or unjust
accretionary Growth or increase in size by gradual external addition, fusion, or inclusion.
accruement To come to one as a gain, addition, or increment
acerbated to vex or annoy
acetaminophen A crystalline compound, C8H9NO2, used in medicine to relieve pain and reduce fever. Also called paracetamol.
acoustician a specialist in acoustics
acrid Unpleasantly sharp, pungent, or bitter to the taste or smell.
acrophobia fear of arachnids
actinouranium The isotope of uranium with mass number 235, fissionable with slow neutrons.
ad infinitum to infinity; having no end
adagios In a slow tempo, usually considered to be slower than andante but faster than larghetto. Used chiefly as a direction.
adipose tissue A type of connective tissue that contains stored cellular fat.
Adirondack Mountains A group of mountains in northeast New York between the St. Lawrence River valley in the north and the Mohawk River valley in the south. The range, an extension of the Canadian Shield, rises to 1,629 m (5,344 ft).
adjuration An earnest, solemn appeal.
adonis, Adonis a handsome young man
adulation excessive flattery or admiration
adversary, Adversary an opponent; the Devil
Aegean 1. Of or relating to the Aegean Sea. 2. Of or relating to the Bronze Age civilization that flourished in the area of the Aegean Sea, as at Crete.
aeroallergen Any of various airborne substances, such as pollen or spores, that can cause an allergic response.
Aesopian Greek fabulist traditionally considered the author of Aesop's Fables, including "The Tortoise and the Hare" and "The Fox and the Grapes."
afflatus A strong creative impulse, especially as a result of divine inspiration.
affluence to be rich or well off; an abundance
Afrikaans A language that developed from 17th-century Dutch and is an official language of South Africa. Also called Taal.
aggiornamento The process of bringing an institution or organization up to date; modernization.
aggrieved Feeling distress or affliction.
agrostology the study of grasses
aide-mémoire A memorandum setting forth the major points of a proposed discussion or agreement, used especially in diplomatic communications.
aigrette, aigret An ornamental tuft of upright plumes, especially the tail feathers of an egret.
albatross Any of several large web-footed birds constituting the family Diomedeidae, chiefly of the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, and having a hooked beak and long narrow wings.
