Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is homeostasis? | is the concept of internal stability maintained by the body |
What are negative feedback loops and provide an example of one | negative feedback loops initiate a change by creating a response that is opposite of the disturbance/what caused homeostasis to be off. An example is when our body temperature increases. Hypothalamus triggers the activity of sweat glands to cool us down |
What are the three classes of carbohydrates? | Monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides |
What makes phospholipids different from other triglycerides? | The phosphorus group is water soluble while the 2 fatty acids are lipid soluble so this means that this molecule can join two different chemical environments. |
What are the 4 tissue types in the body? | Epithelial, Connective Tissue, Muscle Tissue, and Nervous Tissue |
What is the function of epithelial tissues? | Covers and protects the body surfaces. Lines body cavities. Absorption, secretions, and excretions. |
What is the function of connective tissue? | Supports body structures and transports substances throughout the body |
What is the function of muscle tissue? | Produces body movement and produces heat |
What is the function of nervous tissue? | Communication between body parts. |
What are the cell layers of the epidermis? | Stratum Basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum. |
Describe stratum basale | Bottom most layer of the epidermis |
Describe stratum spinosum | is the spiny layer due to the desmosomes that pull the plasma membranes together |
Describe stratum granulosum | granular look and closely packed together |
Describe stratum lucidum | flat, closely packed, and clear keratinocytes. Nuclei is absent |
Describe stratum corneum | superficial layer of the epidermis. Dead cells continuously being shed and replaced |
List the functions of bones | Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, and hematopoiesis |
