To make something clear when referring to near versus something far: ad ci or la the the noun following the demonstrative adjective.
On prend cette glace-ci, pas cette glace-la. We'll have this ice cream, not that ice cream.
J'aime ce cadeau-ci, pas cette glace-la. I like this gift, but I prefer that gift.
Tu achestes ce fromage-ci ou ce fromage-la? Are you buying this cheese or that cheese?
Nous achetons ces bonbons-ci et Isabelle achete ce gateau-la. We're buying these candies, and Isabelle is buying that cake.
