| Term | Definition |

| Plot | Events that take place that are causally related to one another |
| Exposition | Find out about characters and how they are related to each other; position is static and stable |
| Inciting Incident | Begins changes to the characters world |
| Rising Action | Things get more and more tense |
| Climax/Turning Point | Something happens that cannot be undone |
| Falling Action | How the characters deal with the turning point |
| Resolution/Conclusion | How things work out in the end |
| Subplot | Involves different side characters |
| Freytag's Pyramid | Typical kind of narrative structure |
| Narrative Viewpoint | Person, animal, object that the reader views the action through |
| Third Person | Unknown voice is speaking |
| Third Person Limited | The narrator sees into the mind of one character |
| Third Person Omniscient | The narrator sees into every characters mind |
| Second Person | "You" viewpoint; giving orders to somebody |
| First Person | "I" viewpoint; usually unreliable |
| Implied Author | Real authors feelings/thoughts versus the narrators thoughts/feelings |
| Character | Human or human equivalent |
| Central Character | Often in conflict with another person |
| Character Foil | Contrasts the main character or is an opposition to the main character |
| "Stock" Characters | Stereotypical characters: good cop and bad cop, etc. |
| Archetypes | Remind us of a different story |
| Round Character | Character we get to know a lot about |
| Flat Character | Character we don't get to know a lot about |
| Dynamic Character | Character that changes |
| Static Character | Character that does not change |
| Setting | Time or place |
| Time | Could be an era, a year, a specific day, a season, a time of day, etc. |
| Specific Setting | Impacts theme |
| Author Time | When the book is written |
| Reader Time | When the book is read |
| Archetypes | Symbols that are found in many other stories and cultures |
| Invented Symbols | Specific to story |
| Symbol | Something that has a meaning beyond itself |
| Allusion | Reference to another work that the reader is expected to know |
| Theme | What is being communicated throughout the story |
| Contemporary Fiction Theme | About the relationships of humans or some sort of insight into human life |
| Older Fiction Theme | Moral lesson, guide to human behavior |
| Clues to Theme | Title, repetition, thematic statements, character dynamism |
