| epithelial membrane | thin sheet of tissue lining the internal and external surfaces of the body |
| cutaneous membrane | another name for skin |
| mucous membrane | thin sheet of tissue lining the body cavities that open to the outside world. |
| serous membrane | thin sheet of tissues that line body cavities closed to the outside world |
| serous fluid | a thin, clear liquid that serves as a lubricant between parietal and visceral membranes |
| synovial membrane | the lining of the synovial joint cavity that produces synovial fluid |
| keratin | a tough protein found in the skin, hair and nails |
| epidermis | the outer layer of skin |
| dermis | layer of skin between the epidermis and hypodermis; includes nerve endings, glands, and hair follicles |
| hypodermis | the tissue that connects the skin to underlying structures |
| keratinocytes | cells within the epidermis that produce keratin |
| melanin | a pigment that protects the body against the harmful effects of ultraviolet ray damage from the sun |
| melanocytes | specialized cells in the skin that produce melanin |
| dermal papillae | permanent ridges of the skin |
| Meissner's corpuscles | sense light pressure |
| Pacinian corpuscles | sense deep pressure |
| carotene | orange-yellow pigment deposited in the skin |
| jaundice | a blood disorder characterized by yellow-colored skin and whites of the eyes |
| exocrine gland | a gland that secretes its product to the outside world |
| sebaceous gland | glands located al over the body that produce sebum |
| sebum | an oily substance that helps to keep the skin and hair soft |
| acne | the occurrence of inflamed or infected sebaceous glands in the skin |
| seborrhea | excessive discharge of sebum from the sebaceous glands. |
| sudoriferous gland | sweat glands that are distributed in the dermis over the entire body |
| eccrine gland | sweat gland located over the majority of the body that produce a clear, acidic fluid that consists of approximately 99% water, but also contains wast products such as urea, uric acid, salts and vitamin C |
| apocrine gland | sweat gland located in the genital and armpit areas that secrete a milky fluid consisting of sweat, fatty acids and proteins. |
