Photo Terms
| Term | Definition |

| aperture (f-stop) | the size of the opening in the lens that impacts how much of the photo is in focus |
| shutter | allows light to pass through to the sensor for a set amount of time |
| DSLR | digital single lens reflex - camera with a digital sensor, that uses the same lens for framing, focusing and taking the photograph |
| white balance | balancing the color temperature in the image so that white objects appear white even in different lighting |
| depth of field | how much of the image is in focus - ranging from shallow (very little in focus) or deep (lots in focus) |
| rule of thirds | composition guideline that splits the frame into thirds, creating more dynamic photos when the subject is placed on a third |
| exposure (including under- and over-exposed) | total amount of light in a photo, with overexposed meaning too bright and underexposed meaning too dark |
| exposure triangle | the total amount of light in a photo impacted by ISO, aperture and shutter speed |
| focal length | the distance between the lens and the image sensor, with higher numbers meaning a bigger zoom |
| focus | the part of the photo that is clear, with no aesthetic blur |
| ISO | impacts the camera sensor's sensitivity to light |
| jpeg | file format used most commonly - allows a large amount of information to be stored without as much storage as raw files |
| shutter speed | the amount of time the shutter is open while taking the photo, measured in seconds or fractions of a second |
| bokeh | aesthetic blur in a photo - out-of-focus areas that add to the overall effect of the image |
| manual focus | setting the lens so that the focus must be adjusted by hand |
| long exposure | adjusting the shutter speed to longer units of time, measured in seconds, in order to capture moving lights or objects with motion blur |
| viewfinder | device on the camera that shows what the lens will capture when taking the photo |
| noise | grain or visual distortion in a photo which can be used for artistic effect but is generally avoided in photojournalism |
| macro (camera mode/lens) | extreme close up in photography that showcases an object larger than life size |
| lens flare | bright light hitting the sensor and scattering being caught in a photo |
