| Variety | Contrast in size, shape, density, and color |
| Focal Point | Point of main interest achieved by value or color |
| Balance | Perceived distribution of visual weight |
| Scale/proportion | Size and quantity of elements within a composition |
| Direction | A dominant horizontal, vertical, or diagonal trajectory |
| Space/Perspective | Representation of space through line, value or color |
| Open VS Closed | Objects may, or may not be truncated by the picture frame |
| Linear VS Painterly | Outlines of objects may or may not be blurred |
| Sequence | Repetition of shapes in ratios to one another |
| Dominance | One element of art predominates over the others |
| Subordinance | A secondary element of design |
| Tromp L’oeil | Trick of the eye |
| Centrality | Placement in the center is more important than the edge |
| Height | Placement at the top is more important than the bottom |
| Recension | Preservation is good, revision is not |
| Size | Larger objects are more important than smaller ones |
| Chiaroscuro | Content between light and dark in rounded objects |
| Core Shadow | Dark shadows located between a highlight and half tone |
| Cross hatchings | Groups of parallel lines that cross at angles |
| Expressed Line | A connection between two points |
| Geometric Shape | Circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, trapezoid, etc. |
| Hatchings | Parallel drawn lines |
| Hue | The name of the color (blue, red, etc.) |
| Implied Line | Juxtaposition of color |
| Organic Shape | Combination of curves and angles that fall into families |
| Saturation | The amount of color present |
| Surface Texture | Texture that can be felt with the sense of touch |
| Visual Texture | Texture that results from the subdivision of space |
