FSM- Elements
A list of elements for Form, Space, and Media
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Line | Series of adjacent points, actual or implied. Shows motion. |
| Plane | A 3-dimensional form that has length and width, but minimal thickness. |
| Shape | A flat, enclosed area made when a line connects or other shapes surround. |
| Form | The 3-dimensionality of shape. Circle vs. Sphere. |
| Space | The area within or around an area of substance. |
| Value | The relative lightness or darkness of a surface. |
| Color | The effect of constant wavelengths of an electromagnetic spectrum. |
| Texture | Visual or tactile quality of a form. |
| Volume | An enclosed area of a 3-dimensional space. |
| Mass | A solid 3-dimensional form. |
| Positive Space | What we read as the image or the objects of the design. The space occupied. |
| Negative Space | The unoccupied or empty space between the positive elements. |
| Implied Line | A line that is suggested by the positions of shapes or objects within a design. |
| Actual Line | A line that is physically present in a design. |
| Contour Line | A line that describes the edges of a form and suggests 3-dimensional volume. |
| Simulated Texture | The illusion of texture on a smooth surface. |
| Abstract Texture | Simulated texture that is simplified or reduced to its essence. |
| Invented Texture | Texture that is not related to the actual texture of an object. |
| Orientation | Refers to the line's horizontal, vertical, or diagonal position. -Diagonal/curving lines are generally more dynamic. -Horizontal lines are typically the most stable. -Vertical lines imply potential change. Can be static or dynamic. |
| Direction | The implied movement of a line. Line weight accentuates movement. |
| Continuity | Linear flow of a line. It can enhance direction. |
| Geometric Shapes | Shapes distinguished by their crisp, precise edges and consistent curves. |
| Organic Shapes | Shapes commonly found in the natural world of plants and animals. |
