Essay Basics

These sets of flashcards will help you be prepared for the test.

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 components of an essay? The introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
Why is it important to cite your sources? Citing your sources is very important to give credibility to the author and prevent plagiarism.
What is the purpose of a hook in an essay? To interest the reader and hold their attention.
What is a thesis statement? A sentence that explains the main topic and what the reader should expect from the essay or paper
What is the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing? The difference is you summarize when you simplify a content to its whole source. You paraphrase when you rephrase and highlight a portion of a source in your own words.
What is tone when writing a paper? The writer's attitude on the writing based on the words they use that make the reader feel a certain way.
What are transition words? Words used to smoothly help the reader move from one idea to another.
What are 2 ways you could use quoting for? You could use quoting to refer to other pieces of work. Quoting can also be used to highlight a particular sentence or phrase.
What is the meaning of a genre? This refers to the type of style the literary work will be expressed as.
What is included in the introduction of an essay? The background information, hook, and thesis statement should all be included.
