Physiology week 1-6
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Homeostasis | refers to stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body. It is an organism's ability to keep a constant internal environment, |
Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a common function. |
Intracellular control | Mechanisms operate at the cell level. These mechanisms regulate function within the cell, often by means of genes and enzymes. |
Intrinsic control | Mechanisms operate at the tissue and organ levels. Also called local control or autorefulation, intrinsic mechanisms often make use of chemical signals. |
Extrinsic control | "outside" control and operates at the system and organism levels. Extrinsic control usually involves nervous and endocrine (hormonal) regulation. |
Semipermeable membrane | allows water to pass through the membrane, but blocks the passage of at least one solute. |
Metabolism | The chemical reactions that occur in the body. |
Catabolism | The kind of metabolism that breaks down molecules, usually nutrient molecules, and thereby releases energy from the broken molecules. |
Anabolism | The kind of metabolism that builds large, complex molecules from smaller ones. |
Catalyst | A chemical that reduces the amount of activation energy needed to start a chemical reaction. |
