TermDefinition
Texture Refers to the tactile qualities of a surface. This element of art deals with the way objects feel or the way it looks like they would feel.
Actual texture is the feeling of a surface that can be touched.
Implied texture how you would imagine a surface feeling like in a photograph.
Shape An enclosed two-dimensional area of space created through lines or other elements of the composition.
Geometric shapes are defined by names such as: circle, triangle, square...
Organic shapes are imprecise shapes.
Positive space is the areas of the artwork filled with the content.
Negative space is the space in between the content.
Color The visual property of the pigment of an object.
Hue is the name of a color.
Value Refers to the lightness and darkness of a color.
Tint the artist adds white to a color.
The primary colors red, blue, and yellow
Primary colors cannot be made from other colors.
The secondary colors are orange, green, and violet.
Secondary colors are made from mixing the primary colors.
The warm colors are red, orange, yellow, and anything in between.
The Cool colors are blue, green, violet and anything in between.
Neutrals include black, white, gray, brown and beige
A monochromatic scheme consists of different values (tints and shades) of a single color.
Complementary colors are the colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel
Intensity refers to the brightness or dullness of a color
Bird’s eye view a view as seen from above (looking down)
Worm’s eye view a view as seen from below (looking up)
