Misc. Lab Animals | -woodchuck, armadillo, opossum, bats, amphibians, newts/grass frogs, snakes, birds, fish, invertebrates |
Woodchuck | animals housed in rabbit type cages and fed rodent chow, used as a model for hibernation/obesity, prone to malignant hepatoma & hepatocellular adenocarcinoma. Their hepatitis virus resembles human Hepatitis B. |
Armadillo | animal model for human leprosy, low body temp of 80-96.8 allows Mycobacterium lepra to grow in animal, is susceptible to trypanosomiasis and schistosomiasis. |
Leprosy | a contagious disease that affects the skin, mucous membranes, and nerves, causing discoloration and lumps on the skin and, in severe cases, disfigurement and deformities. |
Opossum | only native marsupial in the US, used for its semi-embryonic state of birth, opportunity for direct observation of embryonic development. |
