What is a membrane potential? (Chp 19) A difference in electrical charge across the plasma membrane of a neuron.
Functions of the Thalamus (Chp 20) Part of the mechanism responsible for sensations; part of the mechanism responsible for emotions by associating sensory impulses (pleasant vs unpleasant); arousal or alerting mechanism; produce complex reflex movements
What is a nerve plexus? (Chp 21) A structure in which fibers of several different rami join together to form individual nerves.
What receptors do acetylcholine bind to? (Chp 22) Nicotinic and muscarinic receptors
What is a tickle? (Chp 23) Results from tactile stimulation of the skin by someone else.
Where are the sensors of sound exist? (Chp 24) The cochlea
How do hormones reach target cells ? (Chp 25) Hormones travel by way of the circulating bloodstream.
What hormones does the thymus secrete? (Chp 26) Thymosin and thymopoietin
Functions of platelets (Chp 27) Releases clot-activating substances and helps in formation of actual blood clot by forming platelet "plugs"
Function of the Heart Coverings (Chp 28) Provides protection against friction
Functions of the hepatic portal circulation (Chp 29) Removes excess glucose from the blood and stored in the liver; removal of toxins
What is a pulse? (Chp 30) The alternate expansion and recoil of an artery.
What is mechanical filtration? (Chp 31) Lymph nodes physically stop particles from progressing farther in the body.
What is a fever? (Chp 32) A fever is a body-wide inflammatory response that manifests as a state of abnormally high body temperature.
What does immunoglobulin M do? (Chp 33) IgM is the antibody that immature B cells synthesize and insert into their plasma membrances.
What is the medullary rhythmicity area? (Chp 36) The area that generates the basic rhythm of the respiratory cycle of inspiration and expiration.
What is the job of hemoglobin? (Chp 37) To transport oxygen and carbon dioxide around the body
Function of saliva (Chp 40) Contains the enzymes that helps digest food and moisten food for easier swallowing
