TermDefinition
Bone 2nd hardest natural body substance, composed of cells (osteoblasts and osteocytes) embedded in a matrix
Ossification hardening of the matrix
Bone Functions -support, protection, leverage, storage, blood cell formation (hematopoiesis)
Cancellous Bone light and spongy bone, tiny "spicules of bone appear randomly arranged.
Compact Bone heavy and dense bone, tiny tightly compacted cylinders of bones. Composed of haversian systems that run lengthwise with the bone.
Periosteum membrane that covers the otuer surfaces of bones
Endosteum membrane that lines hollow interior surfaces
Osteoblasts cells that form bone
Osteocytes osteoblasts surrounded by bone
Osteoclasts these remodel and remove bone
Volkmann's Canals channels through bone matrix that contain blood vessels, join at right angles to haversian system
Nutrient Foramina large channels in large and long bones, carry blood in and out of bone marrow
Endochondral Bone Formation where cartilage template is replaces by bone. Diaphysis is the primary growth center and the secondary growth center is the epiphysis
