vocabulary list

TermDefinition
active cell the cell that is currently selected. Has thick black border around it.
active sheet the sheet the user is currently working on in a workbook. The name of the tab of the active sheet is bold.
asterisk symbol the multiplication symbol in a spreadsheet
autofit automatically resizes the column to fit the widest entry.
border tool formatts lines around a cell
cell the intersection of a row and column. Cells hold data and perform functions
cell address the column letter and row number of a cell
column vertical part of the worksheet identified by letters.
equals sign the first thing that must be entered in a formula
fill color the paint bucket. fills a cell with a color.
fill handle small square in the lower right corner of a selection.
fill series tool to complete a series such as dates or days of the week
format painter copies formatting from a selected cell onto new cells
formula an equation that makes calculations based on the data in your spreadsheet
formula bar displays the active cells content. Located directly above the cells.
insert chart - bar used to compare data
insert chart - line used to show changes over time
insert chart - pie used to show the percent of a whole
insert image used to insert images from the computer or a web search
labels/headings the words or titles used in spreadsheet.
range selection of two or more cells.
row horizontal part of the worksheet identified by numbers.
sorting tool arranges data into meaningful order so that you can analyze it more effectively
sum function used to add a long column of numbers.
text box places text over the worksheet so it can be moved around
view-freeze allows you to freeze rows or columns
workbook a single spreadsheet file with a collection of worksheets.
wrap text makes the text fit into the width of the cells by adjusting the cell height
conditional formatting allows you to apply specific formatting to cells that meet certain criteria
