Nervous system mental health terms.

QuestionAnswer
anxiety disorders Mental conditions characterized by excessive, irrational dread of everyday situation, or fear that is out of proportion to the real danger in a situation.
panic attack Unexpected sudden experience of fear in the absence of danger, accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, chest tightness, dizziness, sweating, nausea, feelings of unreality, choking sensations, or mixed.
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) marked emotional disturbance after experiencing or witnessing a severely stressful event- such as war, natural disaster, or other life threatening/traumatic event.
phobia a persistent and unreasonable fear of a particular object, activity, or situation
agoraphobia fear or avoidance of situations, such as crowds or wide open places, where one has felt loss of control and panic
claustrophobia An abnormal fear of narrow, enclosed spaces
social anxiety disorder an anxiety disorder involving the extreme and irrational fear of being embarrassed, judged, or scrutinized by others in social situations
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) a disorder in which repetitive, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and ritualistic behaviors (compulsions) designed to fend off those thoughts interfere significantly with an individual's functioning
attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) characterized by a short attention span and impulsive behavior that is inappropriate for the child's developmental age
dyslexia a learning disability that results in difficulty reading and writing
autistic spectrum disorder a condition with different levels of symptom severity in which a young child has difficulty developing normal social relationships and communication skills, may compulsively follow repetitive routines, and has intense interests that are sometimes unusual
dissociative identity disorder disorder occurring when a person seems to have two or more distinct personalities within one body
bipolar disorder a condition characterized by cycles of abnormal, persistent high mood (mania) and low mood (depression)
manic behavior includes an abnormally elevated mood state, including inappropriate elation, increased irritability, severe insomnia, poor judgment, and inappropriate social behavior
depression a common mood disorder characterized by lethargy and sadness, as well as the loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities
seasonal affective disorder (SAD) a seasonal bout of depression associated with the decrease in hours of daylight during winter months
catatonic behavior marked by a lack of responsiveness, stupor, and a tendency to remain in a fixed posture
delusion a false personal belief that is maintained despite obvious proof or evidence to the contrary
hallucination false sensory experiences, such as seeing something in the absence of an external stimulus
Schizophrenia a psychotic disorder characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations
Munchausen syndrome (factitious disorder) a condition in which the "patient" repeatedly makes up clinically convincing simulations of disease for the purpose of gaining medical attention
psychotrophic drugs medications to tx mental disorder
antidepressants administered to prevent or relieve depression
antipsychotic drugs administered to treat symptoms of severe disorders of thinking and mood that are associated with neurological and psychiatric illnesses
anxiolytic drugs anti-anxiety drugs
mood-stabilizing drugs Used to tx mood instability and bipolar disorder
stimulant works by increasing activity in certain areas of the brain to increase concentration and wakefulness
anorexia nervosa Condition characterized by a false perception of body appearance. This leads to an intense fear of gaining wt and inability to maintain a healthy wt.
bulemia nervosa Eating disorder characterized by binging (over-eating) and purging (throwing up). May also involve misuse of laxatives and diuretics.
factitious disorder by proxy a form of child abuse; although seeming very concerned about the child's well-being, the mentally ill parent will falsify an illness in a child by making up, or inducing symptoms, and then seeking medical treatment, even surgery, for the child.
delirium tremens a disorder involving sudden and severe mental changes or seizures caused by abruptly stopping the use of alcohol
