Peripheral Nervous System

TermDefinition
Olfactory Nerves Composed of axons of neurons whose dendrites and cell bodies lie in the nasal mucosa, high up along the septum and superior conchae (turbinates).
Optic Nerves Axons from the innermost layer of sensory neurons of the retina compose the second pair of cranial nerves.
Abducens Nerve A motor nerve with fibers originating from a nucleus in the pons in the floor of the fourth ventricle and extend-ing to the lateral rectus muscles of the eyes.
Cochlear Nerve Consists of peripheral axon fibers starting in the organ of Corti in the cochlea of the inner ear.
Hypoglossal Nerve Contains sensory fibers from proprioceptors in muscles of the tongue.
Reflex The action that results from a nerve impulse passing over a reflex arc.
Autonomic Reflexes Consist of contractions of smooth or cardiac muscle or secretion by glands.
Somatic Reflexes Contractions of skeletal muscles.
Reflex Center Synapses in anterior gray column between axons of sensory neurons and dendrites and cell bodies of LMNs.
Axons In anterior roots of second, third, and fourth lumbar spinal nerves and femoral nerves; terminate in quadriceps femoris muscle.
