Physiology Wk 7-13

QuestionAnswer
T/F: Hypercalcemia can stimulate Chvostek sign which is an abnormal spasm of facial muscles. False, it is hypocalcemia which involves increased neuromuscular excitability, cramping and even twitching of muscles.
How does total body water content differ in men and women? A woman's body is composed of 45% to 50% water, while a man's body is composed of 55% to 65% water. It's this way because women naturally have more fatty tissue than men.
What are the four pressures involved in Starling's law? -hydrostatic pressure in the capillary (Pc) -hydrostatic pressure in the interstitium (Pi) -oncotic pressure in the capillary (pc ) -oncotic pressure in the interstitium (pi )
What does it mean to be dehydrated? It's a fluid imbalance! This decrease in total body water can cause thirst, poor skin turgor, chapped lips and even muscle weakness.
When does a "fluid shift" occur between blood and interstitial fluid? When the heart is unable to maintain adequate blood flow throughout the circulatory system, the excess fluid pressure within the blood vessels can cause shifts into the interstitial spaces.
T/F: The bicarbonate excess of metabolic alkalosis results because of the massive loss of chloride from the stomach as a result from vomiting. True, loss of chloride or hydrochloric acid can cause an increase of bicarbonate in the extracellular fluid.
What are the two major types of buffer systems in the body and which one of them is the most rapid-acting? There are chemical buffers which can combine with any acid or alkaline that enters the body fluids whereas the physiological buffers serve as secondary defense against harmful shifts. Chemical buffers have the most rapid-acting response.
How do carbonic acid form? Carbonic acid forms in the blood when cells produce waste CO2 through the catabolism of glucose.
What are the two factors that, when together, can help determine urine volume? Glomerular filtration rate which remains constant rate whereas the water reabsorption rate of renal tubules fluctuates considerably.
T/F: Water balance depends on electrolyte balance. True, there is no good electrolyte balance without first having a stable water balance.
