TermDefinition
Hard-Drive A high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit.
Keyboard the set of keys arranged in rows that are used to operate a computer.
Memory the computer hardware devices involved to store information for immediate use in a computer.
Modem short for modulation/demodulation, it is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over (for example) telephone or cable lines.
Monitor a device that accepts video signals from a computer and displays information on a screen.
Mouse sometimes called a pointer, is a hand-operated input device used to manipulate objects on a computer screen.
Operating System the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications and controlling peripherals.
Optical Drive a type of computer disk drive that reads and writes data from optical disks through laser beam technology.
Processor the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that drive a computer; another term for Central Processing Unit.
Sound Card a device that can be slotted into a computer to allow the use of audio components for multimedia applications.
Speakers a hardware device that connects to a computer to generate sound. The signal used to produce the sound that comes from a computer speaker is created by the computer's sound card.
Video Card a printed circuit board controlling output to a display screen.
