Term | Definition |
---|---|
Lithosphere | THe outermost physical layer. |
Asthensosphere | The layer below the lithosphere. |
Tectonic plate | The lithosphere is divided into large moving pieces. |
Deformation | The bending, tilting, and breaking of rock. |
Shear Stress-pg 197 | Causes material to twist and become distorted. |
Compression -pg 197 | Can cause folds as rock is squeezed or shortened. |
Tension-pg 197 | Lengthens and pulls material. |
Convergent boundary | When tectonic plates move toward each other and collide. |
Divergent boundary | When two tectonic plates move away from each other. |
Transform boundary | When plates move past each other in opposite directions. |
Earthquake | ground movements that occur when there is movement in the rocks. |
Focus | the part of the fault where the quake occurred. |
Epicenter | Seismic waves flow outward from all directions. |
Tectonic plate boundary | Where the plates meet. |
Fault | Break in the earth's crust. |
Elastic rebound | The return of rock to its original shape after elastic deformation is called elastic rebound. |
