Lithosphere THe outermost physical layer.
Asthensosphere The layer below the lithosphere.
Tectonic plate The lithosphere is divided into large moving pieces.
Deformation The bending, tilting, and breaking of rock.
Shear Stress-pg 197 Causes material to twist and become distorted.
Compression -pg 197 Can cause folds as rock is squeezed or shortened.
Tension-pg 197 Lengthens and pulls material.
Convergent boundary When tectonic plates move toward each other and collide.
Divergent boundary When two tectonic plates move away from each other.
Transform boundary When plates move past each other in opposite directions.
Earthquake ground movements that occur when there is movement in the rocks.
Focus the part of the fault where the quake occurred.
Epicenter Seismic waves flow outward from all directions.
Tectonic plate boundary Where the plates meet.
Fault Break in the earth's crust.
Elastic rebound The return of rock to its original shape after elastic deformation is called elastic rebound.
