Unit 3 lessons 3-4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | THe outermost physical layer. |
| Asthensosphere | The layer below the lithosphere. |
| Tectonic plate | The lithosphere is divided into large moving pieces. |
| Deformation | The bending, tilting, and breaking of rock. |
| Shear Stress-pg 197 | Causes material to twist and become distorted. |
| Compression -pg 197 | Can cause folds as rock is squeezed or shortened. |
| Tension-pg 197 | Lengthens and pulls material. |
| Convergent boundary | When tectonic plates move toward each other and collide. |
| Divergent boundary | When two tectonic plates move away from each other. |
| Transform boundary | When plates move past each other in opposite directions. |
| Earthquake | ground movements that occur when there is movement in the rocks. |
| Focus | the part of the fault where the quake occurred. |
| Epicenter | Seismic waves flow outward from all directions. |
| Tectonic plate boundary | Where the plates meet. |
| Fault | Break in the earth's crust. |
| Elastic rebound | The return of rock to its original shape after elastic deformation is called elastic rebound. |
