repetition | when words or phrases are repeated |
personification | when animals, objects, or ideas are given human qualities |
sensory language | language that appeals to the senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell |
symbol | when something stands for something beyond itself |
narrative poem | a poem that tells a story |
concrete poetry | a poem that takes the shape of its subject |
alliteration | when nearby words begin with the same consonant sound Ex. Dunkin’ Donuts, “The candy was killing my cavity.” |
haiku | 3 lined Japanese poetry that often describes a scene in nature and expresses strong emotion |
imagery | when a picture is created in the reader’s mind using words |
exact rhyme | when words sound identical Ex. cats, bats |
half rhyme | when words sound similar but not identical Ex. pans, hams |
rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhymes |
mood | the feeling the reader has from the words the author chose |
rhyme | when words sound alike |
extended metaphor | when a comparison not using "like" or "as" exists over multiple lines |
figurative language | language that is not meant to be taken by its dictionary definition |
