| characterization | technique used by author to develop characters |
| climax | most intense moment, when main char. takes plot-changing action |
| internal conflict | conflict between opposing tendencies in the mind |
| external conflict | conflict between main character and someone / thing else |
| dystopia | fiction subgenre that presents the opposite of a perfect world/society |
| utopia | fiction subgenre that presents a perfect world / society |
| exposition | beginning of story, where setting, background, & characters are introduced |
| flashback | conversation, scene, or event that happened before the beginning of the story that interrupts plot sequence |
| flashforward | a sudden jump ahead in the plot that required the reader to infer what happened |
| fiction | narrative writing about imaginary people, places, & events |
| fantasy | a subgenre of fiction that contains magical or unexplainable elements |
| science fiction | a subgenre of fiction that contains technology or consequences that could one day become a reality |
| foil character | a character that provides a contrast to another character |
| flat character | a character whose personality is only partly developed |
| figurative language | language that conveys ideas beyond their ordinary meaning |
| frame narrative | a story within a story |
| foreshadowing | hints that indicate events that will happen later |
| falling action | when tension lessens as a result of main character's plot-changing action |
| first person point of view | narrator uses pronoun "I "and tells story in his/her own words |
| initial incident | when the story's conflict is introduced |
| rising action | when tension builds as main character knows s/he must act on conflict soon |
| resolution | story's ending, when conflicts are resolved & loose ends come together |
| imagery | use of words to create vivid sensory experience |
| metaphor | direct comparison of 2 unlike things |
| simile | comparison of 2 unlike things using "like" or "as" |
| mood | feeling or atmosphere of the story |
| narrator | teller of the story |
| plot | plan of action; events in a story |
| round character | a character whose personality is developed |
| style | the way the author using language |
| symbol | a person, place, or thing that stands for something else |
| setting | the where and when of the story's action |
| short story | work of fiction to be read in one sitting |
| situational irony | when the opposite of what is expected happens |
| suspense | excitement or tension the reader feels while reading the story |
| theme | universal message / lesson of the story |
| third person point of view | narrator is outside the story and uses pronouns "she" , "he." |
| third person limited POV | outside narrator uses "s/he" but largely tells story through one character's perspective |
| third person omniscient POV | outside narrator is "all-knowing" |
| stock character | a character type that is not developed |
| verbal irony | saying one thing but meaning the opposite;\, aka sarcasm |
