| Term | Definition |

| Work | Any activity which requires effort |
| Employment | Work carried out in return for payment |
| Unemployment | People who want to work for payment but are unable to find suitable employment |
| Labour Force | All the people who are available to work |
| Employer | Hires employees and pays them a wage or salary in return for the work that they have done |
| Employee | Provides work in return for a wage or salary |
| Contract of Employment | A written statement of terms and conditions of employment |
| Wage | Usually paid weekly and is based on the number of hours worked |
| Salary | Usually paid monthly and is the same every month regardless of the number of hours worked |
| Benefit=in-Kind | Any non-cash income that is given to employees |
| Industrial Relations | The relationship between employers and employees and how well they get on together |
| Strike | When workers refuse to do their work because they have an Industrial Relations dispute |
| Trade Unions | Organisations that are set up to protect workers |
| Shop Steward | Elected by employees to represent them in meetings with the Trade Union |
| Volunteering | Doing something without payment that will benefit other people, society or the environment |
| Outsourcing | When a business pays outside firms to do specialist work |
| E-Working | Working from home at least one day a week, using the internet to communicate with colleagues |
