Term | Definition |
---|---|
absolute refractory period | time during which the local area of the membrane has surpassed the threshold potential and will not respond to any stimulus. |
acetylcholine (ACh) | type of neurotransmitter used by motor neurons at neuromuscular junctions to stimulate muscle contration at or in some autonomic synapses. |
action potential | nerve impulse: membrane potential fluctuation of an actively conducting axon. |
amine | organic compound containing nitrogen; neurotransmitter synthesized from amino acid molecules. |
catecholamine | chemical category of neurotransmitters that include norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine. |
convergence | a coming together; also, when more than one presynaptic axon synapses with a single postsynaptic neuron . |
depolarization | electrical activity that triggers a contraction of the heart muscle |
divergence | when a single presynaptic axon synapses with more than one different postsynaptic neuron |
excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) | temporary depolarization of postsynaptic membrane following stimulation |
G protien-coupled receptor (GPCR) | receptor mechanism embedded in plasma membranes of cells that receives chemical messangers and initiates signal transduction to the cell by way of a G protien, which triggers the resulting changes in the cell |
hyperpolarization | increase in electrical charges separated by the cell membrane; causes change further below 0 mV |
