Describe complementarity of structure and function Anatomical structures are adapted to perform specific functions. Each structure has a particular size, shape, form, or placement in the body that makes it especially efficient at performing a unique and important activity.
What organs are housed in the pleural cavity? Lungs
Lumen The hollow area of any organ
Is a positive feedback loop stimulatory or inhibitory? Positive feedback control systems are stimulatory.
Is a negative feedback loop stimulatory or inhibitory? Negative feedback control systems are inhibitory.
What are homeostatic control mechanisms? Processes for maintaining or restoring homeostasis.
What are bases? Electrolytes that, when dissociated in solution, shift the H/OH balance in favor of OH.
What are acids? Any substance that will release a hydrogen ion (H) when in solution.
What are buffers? Substances that minimize changes in the concentrations of H and OH ions in our body fluids.
What are anions? Ions with a negative charge
What are cations? Ions with a positive charge
What is a peptide bond? A bond that binds the carboxyl group of one amino acid to the amino group of another amino acid.
