What is the fluid mosaic model? Theory of how cell membranes are constructed
What is Osmosis? Passive transport of water through a selectively permeable membrane with at least one solute present.
What is Simple Diffusion? Movement of particles through the phospholipid bilayer from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration; down the concentration gradient
What would happen to a red blood cell if placed in a hypotonic solution? The red blood cell would swell and could burst
In the sodium-potassium pump... 3 NA+ ions go out of the cell while 2 K+ ions go into the cell
What is phagocytosis? movement of cells/other large particles into a cell by trapping it in a section of plasma membrane that pinches off to form an intracellular vesicle
What is pinocytosis? movement of fluid into a cell by trapping them into a section of a plasma membrane that pinches off to form an intracellular vesicle
What are the 4 Phases of Mitosis? Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telephase
What are the major tissues of the body? Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nervous tissue
What are the 3 types of epithelial membranes? Cutaneous, serous, and mucus membranes
