| midrange server | a medium sized computer used to host programs and data for a small network |
| domain name | a text based internet address used to uniquely identify a computer on the internet |

| volatile | describes a medium whose content is erased when the power is shut off |
| cache memory | a group of fast memory chips located on or near the CPU to help speed up processing |
| pixel | the smallest colorable area in an electronic image, such as a scanned document digital photograph or image displayed on a display screen |
| internet content provider | a person or an organization that provides internet content |
| conventional dial pu internet access | dial up internet access via a conventioanl dial up modem and standard telephone lines |
| direct connection | an always on type of internet connection in which the PC or other device is continually to the internet |
| T1 line | a leashed high speed dedicated line used to provide fast direct internet access |
| hotspot | a location that provides wireless internet access to the public |
| search engine | a software program used by a search site to recieve matching web pages from a search database |
| directory search | a type of internet search in which categories are selected to locate information on the internet |
| instant messaging | a way of exchanging real time typed messages with other individuals |
| voice over internet protocol | the process of placing telephone calls via the internet |
