QuestionAnswer
Uniform resource locator (URL) An Internet address, usually beginning with http://, that uniquely identifies a web page.
Ribbon A set of commands goruped by task and used in Office 2007 programs to issue commands to the computer.
Hyperlink Text or an image that is linked to a web page or other type of document.
Application software Programs that enable users to perform specific tasks on a comuter, such as writing a letter or playing a game.
Embedded computer A tiny computer embedded in a product and designed to perform specific tasks or functions for that product.
Midrange server A medium-sized comuter used to host programs and data for a small network.
Supercomputing cluster A supercomputer coomprised of numerous smaller comuters connected together to act as a single computer.
Taskbar The bar located at the bottom of the windows desktop that contains the start button, task buttons, and system tray.
Tablet PC A portable PC about the size of a notebook that is designed to be used with an electonic pen.
Internet appliance A specialized network computer designed primarily for Internet access and/or e-mail exchange.
Bit The smallest unit of data a digital comuter can recognize; represented by a 0 or a 1.
Megabyte (MB) Approximately 1 million bytes
Unicode An international coding system for text-based data using any written language.
Byte A group of 8 bits
RFID tag A device containing a tiny chip and a radio antenna that is attached to an object so it can be identified using RFID technology.
Central processing unit (CPU) The chip located inside the system unit of a computer that performs the processing for a computer. Also called a processor.
Cache memory A group of fast memory chips located on or near the CPU to help speed up processing.
Read-only memory (RAM) Nonvolatile chips located on the motherboard into which data or programs have been permanently stored.
Magnetic disk system A type of storage system that uses flexible plastic or rigid metal disks onto which data is recorded magnetically.
Optical disk A type of storage medium read from and written to using a laser beam.
Arpanet The predecessor of the internet, named after the Advanced REsearch Projects Agency (ARPA).
T1 line A leased high-speed dedicatedline used to provide fast, direct Internet access.
Broadband over fiber (BoF) Very fast, direct internet access via fiber optic networks; also referred to as fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP).
Hotspot A location that provides wireless internet access to the public.
Search site A web site designed to help users search for web pages that match specified keywords or selected categories.
Webinar A seminar presented via the web.
Blog A web page that contains short, frequently updated entries in chronological order, typically by just one individual; also called a web log.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing The process of sharing resources directly between users via the Internet.
Video-on-demand (VOD). The process of downloading movies and televisions shows, on demand, via the internet.
Portal A web page designed to be designated as a browser home page; typically can be customized to display personalized content.
