Communications The transmission of data from one device to another
Hardware The physical parts of a computer system, such as the keyboard, monitor, printer, and so forth.
Software The instructions, also called computer programs, that are used to tell a computer what it should do.
Hyperlink Text or an image that is linked to a Web page or other type of document.
Sizing button One of a group of small buttons located at the top-right corner of a window that are used to resize the window.
Ribbon A set of commands grouped by task and used in Office 2007 programs to issue commands to the computer.
Application software Programs that enable users to perform specific task on a computer, such as writing a letter or playing a game.
Progammer A person whose primary job responsibility is to write, mantain, and test computer programs.
Embedded computer A tiny computer embedded in a product and designed to perfom specific tasks or functions for theat product.
Notebook computer A fully functioning portable PC that opens to reveal a screen and keyboard; also called a "laptop computer."
Binary numbering system The numbering system that represents all numbers using just two symbols (0 and 1)
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) A fixed-length, binary coding system widely used to represent text-baed data for computer processing on many types of computers
Barcode A machine-readable code that represents dara as a set of bars.
System unit The main box of a computer that housed the CPU, motherboard, memory, and other devices.
Motherboard The main circuit board of a computer, located inside the system unit, to which all computer system components connect.
Cache memory A group of fast memory chips located on aor near the CPU to help speed up processing
Read-only memory (ROM) Nonvolatile chips locatd on the motherboard into which data or programs have been premanently stored.
Flash memory A type of nonvolatile memory that can be erased and reprogrammed; commonly implemented in the for of sticks or cards.
Pixel The smallest colorable area in an electronic image, such as a scanned document, digital photograph, or image displayed on a display screen.
Laser printer An output device that used toner powder and technology similar to that of a photocopier to produce images on papaer.
ARPANET The predecessor of the Internet, named after the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) which sponsored its development
Internet service provider (ISP) A business or other organization that provides internet access to others, typically for a fee.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet access Fast, direct Internet access via standard telephone lines
Broadband over fiber (BoF) Very fast, direct Internet access via fiber optic networks; also referred to as fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP)
Hotspot A location that provides wireless Internet access to the public
Directory search A type of Internet search in which categories are selected to locate information on the Internet
Chat room A type of Internet communcations that allows multiple users to exchange written messages in real time.
Blog A Web page htath contains short, frequently updated entries in chronological order, typically by just one individual; also called a Web log
Portal A Web page designed to be designated as a browser home page; typically can be customized to display personalized content
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) An EML-based format designed for sharing content published to a Web site
