computer literacy the knowledge and understanding of basic computer fundamentals.
computer a programable, electronic device that accepts data input, performs processing operations on that data, and outputs and stores the results.
input the process of entering data into a computer, can also refer to the data itself.
processing performing operations on data that has been input into a computer to convert that input to output.
output the process of presenting the results of processing; can also refer to the results themselves.
storage the operation of saving data, programs, or output for future use.
communications the transmission of data from one device to another.
information data that has been processed into a meaningful form.
hardware the physical parts of a computer system, such as the keyboard, monitor, printer, and so forth.
bit the smallest unit of data a digital computer can regognize; represented by a 0 or a 1.
byte a group of 8 bits
gigabyte approximately 1 billion bytes.
unicode an international coding system for text based data using any written language.
keyboard an input device containing numerous keys that can be used to input letters, numbers, and other symbols.
pointing device an input device that moves an onscreen pointer, such as an arrow, to allow the user to select objects on the screen.
mouse a common pointing device that the user slides along a flat surface to move a pointer around the screen and clicks its buttons to make selections.
electronic pen an input device that is used to write electronically on the display screen, also called a sylus when made out of metal or plastic.
scanner an input device that reads printed text and graphics and trasfers them to a computer in digital form.
RFID tag a device containing a tiny chip and radio antenna that is attached to an object so it can be identified using RFID technology,
biometric reader a device used to input biometric data.
arpanet the predecessor of the internet, named after the advanced research projects agency
T1 line a leased high-speed dedicated line used to provide fast, direct internet acces.
hotspot a location that provides wireless internet access to the public.
search site a web site designed to help users search for web pages that match specific keywords or selected categories.
keyword search a type of internet search in which keywords are typed in a search box to locate information on the internet.
videoconferencing the use of computers, video cameras, micorphones, and other communications technologies to conduct face-to-face meetings over the internet.
blog a web page that contains short, frequently updated entries in chronogoical order, typically by just one individual; also called a web log.
webinar a seminar presented via the web.
social networking site a web site that creates a community of individuals with common interests.
portal a web page designed to be designated as a browser home page; typically can be customized to display personalized content.
wiki a collaborative web page that is designed to be edited and republished by a variety of individuals.
