Severity (Warm, Heat, Fire), Location (Interior-Exterior, Individual organs (if applicable), Level in body (Wei qi, Qi qi, Ying qi (nutritive qi), Xue qi (blood); CHARACTERISTICS (e.g., "type of Heat": Damp-Heat, Toxic-Heat, Deficiency-Heat)
Herbs in the Clear Heat/Drain (or Purge) Fire category are generally what taste and temperature? Cold and either sweet or bitter
What 4 organs are most affected by Fire? HT, LIV, LU, ST
Coldest substance in the Materia Medica. Shi Gao
One of the (several) of these Clear Heat/Purge Fire herbs that "warms without drying (body fluids)." And one of the 3-4 that enter LU & ST. (This is the COLDEST of the COLD,) Shi Gao
"Herb of choice when body fluids have been damaged by excess Heat." Also "used very often for Kidney Fire"-- since it goes to the KID in addition to LU & ST. Zhi Mu (aka "know about mother" or Radix Anemarrhaenae)
Goes to LU, ST and KD, nourishes Yin and moistens BF. Good for cough due to 1) LU Heat 2) Yin deficiency and/or 3) LU dryness Zhi Mu (aka "know about mother" or Radix Anemarrhaenae)
The Fireman!! Is also used for UTIs, jaundice, hepatitis. Also "Drains Damp Heat downward" because of its bitter nature. Zhi Zi aka Fructus Gardeniae
Goes to HT, LIV, LU, ST and San Jiao-- ALL THREE JIAOS. So "clears Heat in all 3 jiaos" Zhi Zi aka Fructus Gardeniae
Is bitter and cold. Goes to all 3 jiaos. Cools blood and stops bleeding. "Especially used for Fire in HT, LIV and ST. Zhi Zi aka Fructus Gardeniae
Bland Bamboo. Promotes urination (use for UTIs d/t HT Fire transferred to SI) and is GREAT for irritability. Often used in Shen calming formulas. Herba Lophatheri (aka Dan Zhu Ye) aka bland bamboo
Promotes diuresis and is great for irritability caused by Heat in HT or ST. Herba Lophatheri (aka Dan Zhu Ye) aka bland bamboo
Acrid, Bitter, Cold. Goes to LIV and GB!!! Commonly used for hypertension with Liver Yang rising or Liver Fire. (Might remember that Cao's are often BAC..) Spica Prunella aka "summer withering grass" aka Xia Ku Cao
Lotus Seed Heart! "All about the Heart" Clears Heat from HT and relieves irritability, delirium, insomnia. Clears Heat from Blood and stops bleeding. GOOD FOR MENSTURAL BLEEDING! Plumula Nelumbinis aka Lian (Lotus) Zi (Seed) Xin (Heart)--"All about the Heart", well, and bleeding/gyn bleeding

Contraindication is NO PREGNANCY-- because it is downward draining and could lead to miscarriage. Tian Hua Fen aka "Sky Pollen" or "Heavenly Flower Power" aka Radix Tricosanthus
Along with Shi Gao, Lu Gen and Zhi Mu (LU, ST, KID), this goes to LU-ST and is "famous for clearing Heat and generating body fluids." What distinquishes it? The pregnancy contraindication, the breast abscess indication? Tian Hua Fen aka "Sky Pollen" or "Heavenly Flower Power" aka Radix Tricosanthus
It's the only one that is SALTY!! So it goes to Kidney. But it's most notable effect is on LIVER: Liver Heat, Calming Liver, brightening the eyes, Anchoring Liver Yang. Semen Cassiae. "Seed of Brightness" or "Unhampered Clarity Seed"
