MUSC: Structure

Muscle structures and tissue types

Epimysium a sheath of fibrous elastic tissue surrounding the entire muscle.
Perimysium The connective tissue that surrounds fascicles (group of muscle fibers).

Endomysium Connective tissue surrounding a muscle fiber
Fascicle bundle of muscle fibers
fascia a band or sheet of fibrous connective tissue that covers, supports, and separates muscle
skeletal muscle cells striated and multinucleated
smooth muscle cells single, uninucleate; no striations
cardiac muscle cell uninucleated, branched, striated
cardiac muscle function as it contracts, it propels blood into the circulation; involuntary control
skeletal muscle function voluntary movement; locomotion; manipulation of the environment; facial expression; voluntary control
smooth muscle function involuntary movements of internal organs
