Joints and the different parts of a joint

| articulations | Known as joints. Union between two or more bones |
| fibrous joints | -inflexible layers of dense connective tissue, hold the bones tightly together -does not allow movement -AKA sutures (found in skull) |
| fontanelles | aka soft spots, normally present on the skull of a newborn |
| cartilaginous joints | -allow only for slight movement and consists of bones connected entirely by cartilage -examples include pubic symphysis and where ribs connect to sternum (breast bone) |
| synovial joints | -created where two bones articulate to permit a variety of motions -types include ball and socket and hinge |
| ball-and-socket joint | shoulder and hip |
| hinge joint | knee and elbow |
| Synvoial Fluid | flows within the synovial cavity, acts as a lubricant to make smooth movement of joints possible |
| ligaments | bands of fibrous tissue that form joints by connecting bone to bone or bone to cartilage |
| bursa | fluid-filled sac that allows for easy movement of one part of a joint over another |
| tendon | Attaches muscle to bone |
