The different bones of the skeleton

axial skeleton The portion of the skeleton that supports and protects the head, neck, and trunk
appendicular skeleton Bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton
skull consists of bones of cranium, face, and middle ear
cranium the portion of the skull that encloses the brain
frontal bone anterior portion of the cranium (forehead)
parietal bone two of the largest bones of the skull
occipital bone back of head
nasal bones Bones that form the bridge of the nose.
zygomatic bones cheek bones
mandible lower jaw bone
maxillary bone upper jaw
thoracic cavity AKA rib cage, protects heart and lungs
ribs 12 pairs of bones forming the wall of the thorax
true ribs first 7 pairs of ribs; attach directly to sternum
false ribs ribs 8-10 that connect to the vertebrae in the back
floating ribs last two pairs of ribs; do not attach to sternum
sternum breastbone
xiphoid process lower portion of the sternum
clavicle Also known as collarbone; the bone that joins the sternum and scapula
scapula shoulder blade
humerous upper arm bone
radius smaller bone in the forearm on the same side as the thumb
ulna the larger and longer bone of the forearm
carpals wrist bones
Metacarpals bones of the palm of the hand
phalanges fingers, toes
pelvis protects internal organs and supports the lower extremities
pubis The medial anterior portion of the pelvis
femur thigh bone
tibia the medial and larger bone of the lower leg
fibula The lateral and smaller bone of the lower leg
tarsals ankle bones
metatarsals bones of the foot between ankle and toes
patella kneecap
Popliteal area behind the knee
orbit eye socket
conchae three uneven, scroll-like nasal bones that extend down through the nasal cavity
