A list of medical terminology relating to pathogens and disease

congenital disorders all disorders that are present when the baby is born
prenatal pertaining to before birth
idiopathic disease a disease that develops without a known or apparent cause
nosocomial infection a disease acquired in a hospital or clinical setting
iatrogenic illness an unfavorable response due to prescribed medical treatment
infectious disease an illness caused by living pathogenic organisms such as bacteria and viruses
pathogen A micro-organism that causes disease
transmission spread of disease
contamination the process of becoming unsterile or unclean
communicable disease A disease that can be spread from one person or species to another.
indirect contact transmission Spreads to a host by a contaminated, nonliving object.
Bloodborne pathogens Disease-causing microorganisms carried in the body by blood or body fluids, such as hepatitis and HIV.
droplet transmission Spread of disease by large respiratory droplets produced by the act of coughing or sneezing.
airborne transmission Spread of disease by contact with germs floating in the air.
vector-borne transmission the spread of certain disease due to the bite of a vector
endemic confined to a particular country or area
epidemic A widespread outbreak of an infectious disease.
pandemic Disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects a very high proportion of the population.
acute New, usually of rapid onset
chronic a condition that develops slowly and persists over a period of time
etiology cause of disease
signs Objectively observed indicators of a disorder, such as fever.
symptom subjective evidence of a disease, such as pain or a headache
physiology the study of how the body and its parts work or function
