What is meant by the term threshold potential? The threshold potential occurs when the magnitude of the local depolarization surpasses a limit (typically 59 mV).
Name the three membranous coverings of the central nervous system in order, beginning with the outermost layer. Dura mater, arachnoid membrane, and pia mater are the three membranous coverings of the central nervous system (from outermost layer inward).
What is a dermatome? A myotome? Dermatomes are skin surface areas supplied by a single spinal nerve. A myotome is a skeletal muscle or group of muscles that receives motor axons from a given spinal nerve.
What is the principle of autonomic antagonism? The principle of autonomic antagonism involves the circumstance of both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions continually conducting impulses to autonomic effectors, often exerting an opposite or antagonistic influence on them.
What is meant by the term target cell? Cells with appropriate receptors that are influenced by a signaling chemical.
Name the fluid portion of whole blood. Plasma
When does the heart attain its adult shape and weight? Between puberty and 25 years of age
Name the three major types of blood vessels. The artery, vein, and capillary.
What is the origin of lymph? In the blood and tissue fluid.
What is the purpose of peristalsis Peristalsis propels material from point to point along the GI tract.
