Physiology week 1-6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Dendrites | receive signals from neighboring neurons (like a radio antenna) |
| Axons | transmit signals over a distance (like telephone wires) |
| Axon terminal: | transmit signals to other neuron dendrites or tissues (like a radio transmitter) |
| Myelin sheath: | speeds up signal transmission along the axon |
| Afferent | means that a signal is traveling toward a particular center or point of reference, |
| efferent | means that a signal is traveling toward a particular center or point of reference, |
| variable | is any state or condition in the body that can change or vary |
| Effectors | organs, such as muscles or glands, that directly influence controlled physiological variables |
| relative refractory period | the few milliseconds after the absolute refractory period—the time during which the membrane is repolarizing and restoring the RMP. |
| Neurotransmitters | How neurons communicate with each other |
| ionotropic receptors. | Membrane receptors that are part of an ion channel and thus act directly to change ion permeability when stimulated |
