ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY ANATOMY = study of the structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts PHYSIOLOGY = the science that deals with the functions of the living organism and its parts
THE 3 MAJOR PLANES USED TO DIVIDE THE BODY INTO PARTS The Sagittal (Right & Left), Coronal (Front & Back), and Transverse (Top & Bottom) planes.
METABOLISM, CATABOLISM, ANABOLISM METABOLISM - All the chemical reactions that occur in body cells CATABOLISM - Release energy by breaking down compounds ANABOLISM - Combines molecules into complex biomolicules
ELECTROLYTE Substances that break up, or dissociate, in solution to form charged particles, or ions
ORGANELLE A subcellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell, much like an organ does in the body
MUCUS AND ITS FUNCTION A watery secretion that contains a mixture of mucins, which are a group of about two dozen different proteoglycans. Functions are to protect and lubricate.
TISSUE AND ITS FOUR TYPES Groups of cells that have a similar structure and act together to perform a specific function. Types are Epithelial, Connective, Muscle and Nervous
FONTANELS AND SUTURES OF THE SKULL A space between the bones of the skull in an infant or fetus. The cranial sutures are fibrous joints connecting the bones of the skull
EPIDERMIS, DERMIS, HYPODERMIS The three layers of your skin. Epidermis - thin top layer; Dermis - Deep thick layer; Hypodermis - Subcutaneous layer under the skin that connects skin to bone/muscle.
AXIAL AND APPENDICULAR SKELETON Axial = bones of the head and trunk of a vertebrate. Appendicular = bones that support the appendages (the limbs, shoulder, pectoral and pelvis)
