ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY | ANATOMY = study of the structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts PHYSIOLOGY = the science that deals with the functions of the living organism and its parts |
THE 3 MAJOR PLANES USED TO DIVIDE THE BODY INTO PARTS | The Sagittal (Right & Left), Coronal (Front & Back), and Transverse (Top & Bottom) planes. |
METABOLISM, CATABOLISM, ANABOLISM | METABOLISM - All the chemical reactions that occur in body cells CATABOLISM - Release energy by breaking down compounds ANABOLISM - Combines molecules into complex biomolicules |
ELECTROLYTE | Substances that break up, or dissociate, in solution to form charged particles, or ions |
ORGANELLE | A subcellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell, much like an organ does in the body |
MUCUS AND ITS FUNCTION | A watery secretion that contains a mixture of mucins, which are a group of about two dozen different proteoglycans. Functions are to protect and lubricate. |
TISSUE AND ITS FOUR TYPES | Groups of cells that have a similar structure and act together to perform a specific function. Types are Epithelial, Connective, Muscle and Nervous |
FONTANELS AND SUTURES OF THE SKULL | A space between the bones of the skull in an infant or fetus. The cranial sutures are fibrous joints connecting the bones of the skull |
EPIDERMIS, DERMIS, HYPODERMIS | The three layers of your skin. Epidermis - thin top layer; Dermis - Deep thick layer; Hypodermis - Subcutaneous layer under the skin that connects skin to bone/muscle. |
AXIAL AND APPENDICULAR SKELETON | Axial = bones of the head and trunk of a vertebrate. Appendicular = bones that support the appendages (the limbs, shoulder, pectoral and pelvis) |
