Terms for Poetry
Terms and explanations to be used for answering Poetry questions
| Question | Answer |

| Verse or Stanza | part of a poem |
| Poet | name given to the writer of poems |
| Repetition | when a word or phrase is used more than once |
| Alliteration | when two or more words, beside each other, begin with the same letter |
| Imagery | a picture described in words |
| Simile | when 2 things are compared using the words 'like,' 'as,' or 'than |
| Rhyme | when word endings sound alike |
| Rhyming Pattern | when you label word endings with a letter which is associated with a particular sound and all these letters form a pattern |
| Personification | when human qualities are given to something |
| Sibilance | when words containing an 's' are used to create a mood of quiet, tension, bitterness |
| Assonance | when the same vowel is used in words beside each other. Broad vowels (a, o, u) create a mood of calm, sadness, honesty, seriousness. Slender vowels (e, i) create a sense of action, bitterness |
| Hyperbole | exaggeration |
| Metaphor | when 2 things are compared without using the words 'like,' 'as,' or 'than |
| Imperative Language | language of instruction/giving orders |
| Colloquial Language | language (vocabulary) which is characteristic of an area. Slang |
| Engaging/Persuasive Language | when the writer directly addresses the reader using the words 'you,' or 'we |
| Oxymoron | when words which are opposites are together, eg. deafening silence, fierce friendly |
| Enjambment or Run-On-Lines | when a phrase is broken - part of the phrase on one line and the other part of the phrase on another line. It shows the poet is upset |
| Setting | time and place, where and when of events in the poem/novel/play/drama |
| Onomatopoeia | 'Sound Words' - words which sound like their meanings eg. Bang! |
| Theme | The main Idea or topic of a piece |
