QuestionAnswer
Action Potential -The membrane potential of an active neuron— one that is conducting an impulse. - is an electrical fluctuation that travels along the surface of a neuron’s plasma membrane.
Membrane potentials —slight excess of positively charged ions on the outside of the membrane and slight deficiency of positively charged ions on the inside of the membrane
Neurotransmitters -means by which neurons communicate with one another; there are more than 50 compounds known to be neurotransmitters, and dozens of others are suspected
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) - cushion of fluid both around the organs and within them -reservoir of circulating fluid that, along with blood, the brain monitors for changes in the internal environment.
Where is CSF found? - found in the subarachnoid space around the brain and spinal cord and within the cavities and canals of the brain and spinal cord. -
Cerebellum (literally “little brain”) is located - Just below the posterior portion of the cerebrum and is partially covered by it -A transverse fissure separates the cerebellum from the cerebrum. -The cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain
olfactory nerves - are composed of axons of neurons whose dendrites and cell bodies lie in the nasal mucosa, high up along the septum and superior conchae (turbinates').
Corneal Reflex - is blinking in response to the cornea being touched. It is mediated by reflex arcs with sensory fibers in the ophthalmic branch of the fifth cranial nerve, centers in the pons, and motor fibers in the seventh cranial nerve
Abdominal Reflex -occurs when the umbilicus moves in response to stroking the side of the abdomen
tropic hormones -(hormones that target other endocrine glands and stimulate their growth and secretion)
sex hormones - (hormones that target reproductive tissues),
anabolic hormones - (hormones that stimulate anabolism in their target cells),
STEROID HORMONES - molecules are manufactured by endocrine cells from cholesterol, an important type of lipid in the human body -de-rived from a common molecule, cholesterol
NONSTEROID HORMONES - synthesized primarily from amino acids rather than from cholesterol -Some nonsteroid hormones are protein hormones. - are long, folded chains of amino acids, a structure typical of protein molecules of any sort

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
